Is steak cheaper now that Trump cuts tariffs?

Where Trump has made a name for himself in 2025 regarding the imposition of import tariffs, a contrary movement is now being made with beef. The American president has removed the import tariffs on Argentine beef. The reason: American consumers have to dig deeper into their wallets for a piece of beef. Will a steak now be directly cheaper for the American consumer? Recently, Trump even made a call to ranchers in the United States to lower the prices for their cattle. He indicated that the 'ranchers' were facing high prices due to the tariffs he imposed on countries including Brazil and Argentina, but that the importance of the consumer should not be overlooked. The president also suspects parties in the meat processing industry of price collusion. Argentine tariff removed A 10% tariff on Argentine beef is now being removed. Additionally, the volume of beef that can be imported tariff-free from Argentina to the United States is being quadrupled to 80,000 tons. Above 80,000 tons, a tariff of 25% applies. It is still unclear when the new rates will exactly take effect. Beef prices in the United States continue to rise. Since the beginning of 2020, retail prices have increased by 50% to 55%. Trump promised during his campaign last year to lower food prices. Now, with this year's import tariffs seemingly having an adverse effect, the White House feels compelled to intervene. Dilemma The president is thus in a difficult dilemma. On the other hand, ranchers in the country are not pleased with the news that the tariffs on Argentine beef will be removed. They point to the increased costs in recent years and the difficulty of expanding production. Trump has indicated that he wants to lower costs for ranchers and stimulate the demand for beef. Last summer, the American cattle herd reached its lowest level since at least 1973. The count in January will reveal whether American ranchers have also started to expand production. Whether the mentioned measures will have sufficient effect remains to be seen. The main suppliers of beef to the United States are Australia, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, and New Zealand. This year, the United States has already imported a total of 1.41 million tons of beef, 11% more than in the same period last year. Only 2.3% of this total has so far come from Argentina.
