Increasing headwinds in the pig and piglet trade

In general, traders do not have many piglets left over. But for the batches that are left behind, there is hardly any buyer to be found. Meanwhile, on the pig market, the signals about a price reduction are becoming increasingly concrete. The piglet trade should be viewed a bit in the perspective of September. That is always a difficult month in terms of sales and that is also the case this year. This applies especially to free piglets. For contract piglets within the fixed links, sales are continuing reasonably well. However, there are no buyers for free piglets. Traders therefore sometimes are forced to place these batches themselves, or have to accept a bare quotation price. The sales of loose batches outside the Netherlands are stagnating. In Eastern Europe, many Danish piglets are being offered at low prices. Spain is also not in the market. Temperatures there are still very high, which means the fattening pigs gain weight only with difficulty and therefore remain in the pens longer. Whether that line can be continued in the coming weeks depends strongly on price movements in the pig market. The outlook is not positive, as a result of a growing supply. The signals that the German pig price is heading for a correction of 10 cents are becoming increasingly concrete. It would happen not this week but next week, it is being said. If the German price goes down, it stands to reason that Dutch slaughterhouses will also cut sharply. It is not there yet, but price pressure is increasing. Slaughterhouses are citing a difficult meat trade. In addition, the unexpected price rise at the beginning of August happened so quickly that they now want to correct part of it again now that the slowdown in growth is over.
