Stable prices, undertone in pig market is shifting

Pig and piglet prices are showing a sideways price pattern and are maintaining that this week as well. The markets appear reasonably balanced. However, the undertone in the pig market is starting to shift somewhat. There are some groups of piglets left here and there, but not very many. Finding a sales outlet is challenging, because demand is subdued both domestically and abroad. Within the fixed pairings there is a good balance. As a result, the DCA BestPigletPrice remains unchanged at €34 per piglet. On the free market, prices are around €35 per piglet, but bids are often lacking. This is partly because the pig market at the turn of the month makes a rather uneventful impression. The shortage of a few weeks ago has faded into the background. Slaughterhouses no longer have major shortages, but that is also because the willingness to slaughter is not very high. Latent price pressure During the recent price recovery, purchase prices rose faster than selling prices. There is currently no room for rising meat prices, partly because there is no sign of pleasant late summer weather. This is weighing somewhat on meat consumption. There is also some price pressure in the Asian sales markets, because Brazil and the US are cheaper, it is said. There is especially price pressure on parts with bone. There are therefore reports that German slaughterhouses want to lower the pig price in September, although that threat is not yet very concrete this week. For example, no pigs are being pushed back this week, which is often a concrete indication that a price cut is looming. If supply increases further seasonally in the coming weeks, the pressure may grow. As slaughter figures rise, more meat will also enter the market.
