Dutch Seed Potato Market Looks Stable, but Fontane Supply Tightens

The Dutch seed potato market appears stable on the surface in 2026, but the underlying picture is more selective. While Dutch ware and starch potato growers reduced acreage sharply after 2025 oversupply, seed potato area remained almost unchanged. However, the key signal for processors is not the total seed area, but the shift in variety mix. Fontane, the main Dutch French fry variety, has fallen sharply, pointing to tighter processing-grade seed availability for the 2026/27 planting cycle.According to NAK, the Dutch inspection service for agricultural seed and seed potatoes, the area declared for seed potato certification reached 41,562 hectares in 2026, compared with 41,649 hectares in 2025. This represents a decline of only 87 hectares, or around 0.2% year over year, indicating that seed potato production did not follow the same acreage reduction seen in other potato categories.The contrast with table potatoes is important. Table potato area fell from 82,700 hectares to 70,200 hectares, as growers responded to the price pressure caused by the 2025 oversupply. Starch potato area also declined, falling to 37,700 hectares, the smallest area in three decades. Seed potatoes, by comparison, are steady. This shows that the seed sector is less directly exposed to short-term open-market price movements, partly because it works with longer planning cycles, certification requirements, and variety-specific demand.The Netherlands’ position in seed potatoes is structural. The country is one of the world’s largest suppliers of certified seed potatoes, accounting for over 60% of the global certified seed potato market and 69.2% of intra-EU seed potato trade by value (Eurostat 2023). The country produces approximately 1.5 million tonnes of seed potatoes annually and exports around 800,000 tonnes representing 70-75% of total production to over 80 countries worldwide. This is supported by the NAK certification system, specialised growers, established seed companies and favourable production conditions in key northern regions like Flevoland (reclaimed polder land with the highest yields), Noord-Holland, Friesland, Groningen, and Zeeland. This makes Dutch certified seed an important input not only for domestic growers, but also for potato production in other European and international markets. The more important signal in 2026 is the variety of mix. NAK data show that the overall Dutch seed potato area was broadly stable, but Fontane declined sharply. Fontane, the main processing variety for frozen fries, fell by almost 20% year over year, from 6,047.84 hectares in 2025 to around 4,848 hectares in 2026. Agria increased by about 5.2%, while Spunta rose slightly by 1.4%.This is the main market signal for processors. Fontane is the Netherlands’ key French fry variety, so a smaller Fontane seed area directly affects the future availability of processing-grade potatoes. The decline reflects the difficult 2025/26 processing season, when weaker fries demand and low prices reduced the incentive to maintain the same level of Fontane multiplication. As a result, the total Dutch seed potato area may look unchanged, but the specific pool of seed most relevant for frozen fries has tightened.For 2026/27 sourcing, the message is clear. Dutch seed potato supply should not be viewed only through the total acreage number. Overall area is stable, but Fontane availability is lower. Agria and Spunta may offer some flexibility where specifications allow, but buyers dependent on Fontane should not assume that stable total seed area means stable processing-variety supply.The Dutch seed potato market is therefore sending a more cautious signal than the headline acreage suggests. Seed potatoes held steady while ware and starch potatoes retreated, but the decline in Fontane changes the outlook for frozen fries' supply. For processors and growers planning 2027 plantings, the key indicators will be Fontane allocation, NAK certification results, and the availability of substitute processing varieties. These factors will determine whether the Netherlands can provide enough high-quality seed to support the next processing potato cycle.
