Higher pig price gives piglet price a strong boost

The piglet price gets a significant boost from the rising pig price. Trade in piglets is not much different from last week, but with a further expected price increase for pigs, traders see that the piglet price also has to move up. After a modest increase of €0.50 last week, this week another €3.00 is added to the DCA BestPigletPrice. The quotation thus rises to €29.50 per piglet. Last week some traders felt that clarity about the pig price had to come first before the piglet price could go up. This week those traders have changed their view, because Germany and, following in its wake, the Netherlands raised pig prices by 10 cents. This week a further increase in the pig price is expected in Germany. Most traders foresee a further rise of 5 to 10 cents per kilo. The average expectation this week amounts to a price increase of 7 cents per kilo. One speaks of an increase of 5 cents, because last week it was not possible to raise the price by 15 cents at once. Another thinks that the tight market will lead Germany to increase by 10 cents this week and then leave the price unchanged for the rest of the month. High temperatures in FrancePiglet trade is not going better this week than last week, a trader notes. Sales to Spain have been cancelled because of the high temperatures in France, making transport impossible. It is the sales closer to home that now matter. In addition, the point is getting ever closer at which the piglets will no longer be slaughter-ready for Christmas. Piglets that are placed in three weeks will not be ready for the holidays at the end of this year. It is therefore solely due to the higher pig price that piglets can also rise in price. According to some traders, the price difference with Germany should also be reduced. Others do not agree, because they do not sell a single piglet to Germany. The result of this is that there is still some push and pull to get the Dutch piglet price higher. The same applies to slaughter pigs, which after months of price declines have finally taken another step up. Compared with previous years, however, the price is still significantly lower.
