Europe's heatwave adds new uncertainty to the 2026 potato season

Europe's potato sector has entered the critical tuber initiation and bulking stage of the 2026 season under renewed weather pressure. A late-June heatwave, limited rainfall, and rising crop water demand have pushed yield potential and processing quality back into question across key growing regions. The EC JRC's forecast has already pointed towards softer output in the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, and Poland, with France standing out as an exception. As a result, processors face the risk of both lower average yield and a smaller share of processing-grade supply as harvest approaches. The heatwave was not just limited to southern Europe. Western and central Europe also experienced extreme temperatures in late June, including the main EU-4 potato producers. The Netherlands, Belgium and Germany reached 40°C, while France recorded historic June heatwave. Potatoes are particularly vulnerable to heat stress as tuber development is favored by moderate temperatures. Heatwaves during tuber initiation or bulking can affect both yield and processing quality. Higher temperatures increase water demand and respiration, while diverting plant energy away from tuber formation. If renewed moisture follows a period of heat stress, irregular tuber shape and physiological regrowth may also occur, reducing the share of processing-grade potatoes. Early signs of potato-specific crop stress are coming from Castile and León, Spain’s primary growing region. Potato growers have reported that temperatures above 30°C have slowed crop development and reduced tuber growth. Industry report further suggests that, if hot and dry conditions persist, yields could fall by around 10% to 15% compared with normal levels. The European Commission’s JRC MARS Bulletin had already flagged rising concern for summer crops where soil moisture reserves were depleted, and crop water demand was increasing. Its June 2026 bulletin described growing conditions across Europe as generally favourable, but warned that high temperatures and limited rainfall could intensify water stress in parts of western and central Europe. Reported JRC yield forecasts point to softer potato prospects in several major potato producing countries. The Netherlands’ forecast was at 43.3 tonnes per hectare, down 6% from 2025; Germany at 45.3 tonnes, down 1%; Belgium at 42.8 tonnes, down 5%; and Poland at 30.5 tonnes, down 7%. France was the exception, with an expected yield of 42.5 tonnes per hectare, up 1% from last year. The July update has since given the first official post-heatwave signal, confirming that repeated heatwaves and limited rainfall have increased stress on potato crops. For processors, key risk is not only a lower average yield, but a reduction in the share of potatoes suitable for processing. Even a moderate national-level yield decline can still create sourcing problems if heat stress is concentrated in specific production areas or if it reduces tuber size, dry matter content, storability. The rest of the tuber-bulking period will therefore remain decisive. Timely rainfall and a return to more moderate temperatures could stabilise crop development and limit further losses. While continued heat and dryness would increase the risk of weaker processing quality and tighter raw-material availability heading into harvest.
