Seed potato exports end season 9% lower

In June of this year, 1,957 tonnes of seed potatoes were exported, bringing the total for season 2025/26 to 9.2% lower than the previous season. The total volume of more than 747,000 tonnes is slightly more than the harvests of 2021 and 2023. In total, 747,336 tonnes of propagating material from harvest year 2025 were exported across the border, according to data from the NAO. That is 75,793 tonnes less than a season earlier. In the final month of the export season, 1,957 tonnes of seed potatoes were still exported. Germany took 1,419 tonnes. Also notable: 4 tonnes were returned from Turkey. The exported volume is 3.5% lower than the five-year average, which is just over 774,000 tonnes. Although the total is 9.2% less than that of harvest year 2024, it is more than in 2021 and 2023. 12% less European export In particular, European exports have clearly taken a hit. Ultimately, just over 425,000 tonnes were exported to destinations in Europe this season, which is 61,761 tonnes (-12.7%) less than a season earlier. The major buyers Belgium, Germany, Italy, Spain and France all took significantly less propagating material. The largest decline was due to Germany. That country took almost 22,000 tonnes less, accounting for a decline of 21%. For Belgium, the decline amounts to 6,800 tonnes (-5.1%). Asian and African countries both took more seed potatoes. For Asia, this concerns a small increase of 1,321 tonnes. Africa comes out at nearly 7,500 tonnes higher, accounting for 4.6% growth. Exporters owe this mainly to Algeria, which took more than 4,900 tonnes more seed potatoes. The volume to Sudan almost doubled, to 7,940 tonnes. Egypt, by contrast, took 8,171 tonnes less.
