Egg price decline is accelerating

Egg prices continue to fall sharply. Higher laying-hen productivity is a key reason, while demand has also come under pressure in recent weeks.The decline in egg prices seen over recent months is continuing, as reflected in the NOP quotation. Over the past two weeks, the price of brown size-M eggs has fallen by €1.26 to €15.35, a decrease of 7%. Since peaking in week 14, the price has dropped by 21.8% to €19.62 per kilo.Downward pressure on egg prices remains strong. On the supply side, laying-hen productivity continues to increase. Due to bird flu, many young hens were brought into production earlier this year. It took time for these birds to reach full production, which initially kept output below expectations, but that situation has now changed.The hens are now fully productive, resulting in a clear increase in output. Combined with higher imports, this has created the conditions for a market that, after last year’s exceptionally high prices, is shifting towards lower prices again. The turning point came in week 25, when the price fell to €15.35, compared with €15.79 in the same week of 2025.Market participants report that demand for eggs has been somewhat inconsistent in recent weeks. That is fairly typical for the summer period, although it is no longer a given. In recent years, the growing popularity of eggs, particularly due to their improved reputation as a healthy food, meant there was little sign of the usual summer slowdown. High consumer meat prices also supported egg consumption.However, meat prices are now clearly under pressure, while retail egg prices remain relatively high. If falling egg prices soon feed through to consumer prices, it would not be surprising to see egg demand receive a boost once again.
