Piglet prices remain under heavy pressure

The sharp decline in pig prices over the past week has added further pressure to the piglet market, resulting in a substantial reduction in the DCA BestPigletPrice.Conditions in the piglet trade remain challenging. On the domestic market, finishing pig producers have been reluctant to place new piglets for some time, and traders report that a considerable number of orders were cancelled again last week.Exports to Spain are also being hampered by weather conditions. Forecast higher temperatures across Europe are making long-distance piglet transport increasingly difficult, partly due to existing animal transport restrictions. Prices continue to come under pressure and have now fallen to around €30 per piglet for larger assembled batches.In contrast, demand from Germany has started to recover, according to market participants. Following the significant €8 reduction in the VEZG piglet quotation to €40 per piglet, expectations are growing that the market has reached its floor. Exporters report that this has generated renewed buying interest from German customers.Nevertheless, the overall picture for the piglet market remains difficult. Confidence among finishing pig producers is weak, suggesting that the market is likely to remain buyer-driven in the coming months. This is particularly the case as pig prices continue to face downward pressure, despite the substantial corrections already recorded.In the short term, current market conditions do not necessarily point to further price reductions. However, sentiment remains tense. Slaughterhouses indicate that they are facing declining meat prices, a trend that is also reflected in DCA’s carcass cut-out quotations.The DCA Beurs Mutation Price remains unchanged this week. Based on market submissions, the DCA BestPigletPrice decreases by €4 to €34.50 per piglet. Despite the difficult trading environment, market participants expect the piglet market to move towards a price floor in the near term, provided pig prices stabilise at current levels.
