Container freight rates continue to climb as peak season arrives early

The container shipping market moved decisively higher again this week. The Drewry World Container Index rose by 3% to USD 2,800 per 40-foot container, with the strongest gains recorded on the Asia–Europe and Asia–North America trade lanes. The market is currently being driven by a combination of an early peak season, constrained available capacity and ongoing geopolitical uncertainty.Freight rates on the Asia–Europe route continued their upward trajectory. Rates from Shanghai to Rotterdam increased by 3% to USD 2,861 per container, while rates to Genoa rose by 4% to USD 4,253. As a result, freight rates to the Mediterranean have now surpassed the highest levels seen during last year's peak season.Shipping lines are clearly anticipating further market tightening. Both CMA CGM and MSC have announced new Freight All Kinds (FAK) rates that will come into effect in June and sit well above current spot market levels. These announcements underline carriers' confidence that market conditions will continue to strengthen in the coming weeks. Drewry likewise expects freight rates to move higher over the near term. The upward trend is equally evident on the Transpacific trade. Rates from Shanghai to Los Angeles increased by 3% to USD 3,473 per container, while rates to New York climbed by 6% to USD 4,597. In addition, several carriers have introduced new peak season surcharges, signalling expectations of stronger demand as the summer shipping season approaches. Red Sea disruptions and Hormuz tensions tighten capacityNotably, the current capacity constraints are not the result of large numbers of vessels being laid up. On the contrary, the global fleet is operating at near full utilisation. The primary cause remains the ongoing disruption in the Red Sea. With vessels continuing to divert around the Cape of Good Hope, transit times have lengthened significantly, effectively removing capacity from the market while demand for transport services continues to grow. This dynamic is providing strong support for the current upward trend in freight rates. At the same time, geopolitical developments remain a key source of uncertainty. Tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz intensified further over the past week. Reports of military incidents, sanctions and restrictions on maritime traffic are adding risk to global shipping markets. Several carriers have already begun adjusting their network configurations to mitigate the impact of potential disruptions. Rising bunker fuel prices, additional fuel surcharges and uncertainty over shipping routes are all contributing to further upward pressure on freight rates. Taken together, the market is showing remarkable strength for this stage of the year. Shippers are bringing forward cargo movements in anticipation of higher costs and to avoid potential disruptions later in the year. Meanwhile, carriers continue to manage capacity carefully while actively increasing rates and surcharges. As a result, freight rates appear likely to rise further throughout June, particularly on the Asia–Europe trade, where announced rate levels are already substantially above current spot market prices.
