DCA benchmarks: Dairy Proteins commentary week 17

The upward momentum, particularly in WPC80 prices, continues despite temporary uncertainties and questions about further market developments. For sales into the third and fourth quarters of this year, €22,000 per metric ton is the benchmark— and the upward trend continues beyond that.This week, the DCA quotation for WPC80 remains just below €22,000, but deals are already being concluded at prices of up to €23,000 per metric ton. These prices primarily apply to WPC80 instant, while prices for regular grades are lower. Origin also plays a role in price formation, with product from less common origins typically achieving lower price levels.In addition to WPC80, other products are also available in the market, but WPC80 is currently the clear gold standard. It remains the most in-demand product and the most attractive product to produce. WPI90 serves more specialized markets and is largely produced on a contract basis, with its price generally maintaining a relatively fixed premium over WPC80.At the same time, some traditional WPC80 users are unable to keep pace with the current rapid price increases and are therefore seeking more cost-effective alternatives. A wide range of options is available, from WPC70 and WPC60 to MPC and plant-based proteins. These are often combined with WPC80 in reformulations to achieve a more favorable price point, typically at the expense of some functionality. However, this trade-off is not equally critical for all buyers. Meanwhile, the market for authentic WPC80 continues to evolve, with new applications constantly emerging.One advantage of the high-protein trend for producers is that it is also driving up prices for other dairy products, ranging from MPCs to WPC35 and traditional food-grade whey, with prices rising to nearly €1,800 per metric ton. Liquid whey concentrate is also increasing in price. Currently the DCA benchmark stands at around €1,000 per ton (dry matter), but premiums of up tot €150–€200 a ton are no exception.
