Pigs need to step up to avert pressure on piglet price

The relationship between the piglet and pig price is coming under increasing pressure. If the piglet price is to hold up, the pig price now needs to rise seriously. Whether that will also happen this week is the question. Demand for slaughter pigs is good and supply is manageable to tight. In both the domestic and foreign markets, slaughter pigs are easy to place. Slaughterhouses regularly call traders to ask whether they can deliver a few days earlier than planned. The occupancy rate is not being used to its maximum. Even so, it is uncertain whether this will lead to an increase in the pig price. In Germany there are signals that the VEZG quotation may rise, although slaughterhouses are applying a lot of counter pressure. Last week the quotation remained stable under comparable circumstances. Put positively, on Wednesday it is a toss-up. There appears to be room for an increase. Danish Crown raised the pig and sow quotation last week, while supply is certainly not small due to the enlarged pig herd. Another rise in DCA Beurs Mutation Price The DCA Exchange Movement Price is rising again this week by €0,01 per kilo, although not every trader is in favor of an increase. The chances of an increase in Northwest Europe would have been greater without the loss of slaughter days next week. In the Netherlands, no slaughter takes place on King's Day (27 April) and German slaughterhouses will be closed next Friday because of Labour Day (1 May). This also applies to several European member states. Supply should support higher pig prices, but meat prices are moving mostly sideways this week, according to the DCA cuts mutations. Only the shoulder cuts rise by €0,05 per kilo. This is a seasonal product whose demand usually picks up toward summer. Pressure on piglet market increases Meanwhile, pressure on piglet prices continues to rise seasonally. The Spanish quotation has fallen first, after previously reaching the highest level. The decline is linked to weakening Spanish demand for Dutch piglets. Although supply is growing, relatively few leftover groups are still being offered. The expectation is that this will increase in the coming weeks. Only a clear rise in the pig price can still delay a fall in the piglet price, so the saying goes. The average of the DCA BestPigletPrice falls this week by €0,10 to €57,37 per piglet. The foundation under the Dutch piglet quotation is thereby eroding. Rounded, however, this results in an unchanged price of €57,50 per piglet.
