EU pork markets remain stable after Easter

In line with the usual seasonal pattern, pork prices remained stable following Easter. DCA piglet and pork indexes observed no movement as the market entered a calmer phase following the holiday-driven demand peak. According to DCA Market Intelligence, the EU-5 piglet index closed at €66.93 per head, increasing only by €0.01 compared to the previous week. This reflects a balanced market, indicating that supply is sufficient across Europe. In the Netherlands, the Best Piglet Price remains unchanged at €57.50 per head, indicating an equilibrium between supply and placement capacity. The Nordwest benchmark continues to align closely with Dutch levels at €58, with only minimal differences between countries, highlighting a harmonized European market. Carcass and live pig prices reflected stability in Germany, France, and Denmark, resulting on an EU-6 Pork Price Index of €1.59 as the previous week. Although Spain reported a slight price increase, the trend points now toward stabilization. These developments confirm the typical post-Easter slowdown, where slaughter demand eases after fulfilling holiday orders. Seasonal demand is softening Market fundamentals point toward increasing pig supply in the coming weeks, which could add downward pressure if demand does not keep pace. The expected decline in the Spanish demand following Easter is setting a negative pricing environment for pork. That said, price behavior is currently flat at €65 per head and carcass prices at €1.27 per kilo.
