Lower prices to boost sales of small onions

It is not really busy in the onion trade, but it is also not the case that nothing is happening. It is mainly the larger players who are landing the orders. For the smaller sorters and office exporters, it is harder to get a foothold. According to some, optical sorting makes a difference there. Good onions are certainly available, but there is a price tag attached to them. Certain customers know this and accept it. As a processor, though, you do not move large volumes with that. Some sorters still find that exciting. To create more sales, especially in small onions and finer medium sizes, the price knob is being turned. Whether it really helps attract more customers is open to debate, but one way or another, it is happening. Partly, sorters are also getting the chance to do that because some growers now want or need to get rid of the onions. If a price is agreed only for the 60 mm and the undersize is settled at cost price, the sorter also gets the chance to come through sharply with the finer onions. Stable That does, however, give a somewhat distorted picture of the market. For a good batch of triplets or 40-60 mm that is suitable for longer transit times or for bulk bags, the bale price remains stable. It is mainly the onions that go directly into the bag for sales within Europe that are being heavily discounted at the moment. For the coarse and jumbo onions, the price remains stable. Very nice supers suitable for Spain fetch €26. But, as several sorters indicate, the supply of large onions is simply not abundant.
