Easter pauses the pig and pork markets

As Easter preparations have come to an end, the piglet and pork markets have shown little to no movement and are now searching for a new direction. Weather conditions after Easter being favorable or not for outdoor grilling throughout Europe will determine where prices will be heading towards and whether demand will rise or not.DCA EU-5 piglet prices show a slight increase to €66.92 per head. As for the EU-6 Pork Price Index which remain only with a small tweak of €0.02 higher per kilo ending in €1.59. This flattening trend is in line with expectations following the completion for fresh pork meat, as trading activity slows and the market searches for a new direction.In the Netherlands, the DCA Best Piglet Price had a slight increase to €57.50 per head in week 13, showing stabilization. This reflects balanced situation between supply and placement space, following weeks of tighter availability earlier in the season.As the Nordwest-benchmark in Germany remains a point of attention since piglet prices increased €2.00 per head, maintaining their position above Dutch levels. However, the difference between countries is now minimal.The pork market is clearly transitioning into a post-Easter phase, with carcass and live pig prices stabilising across most regions. Slaughter demand has softened now that holiday-related orders have been fulfilled, reducing urgency in the market.In Germany, France, Denmark and Poland carcass prices remain for the third consecutive week. Although small increases could be seen in the Netherlands and Spain, both countries have also shown stability after all. Rising oil prices add uncertaintyWhile the market is currently stable, external factors are introducing uncertainty. The EU is increasingly preparing for a prolonged energy shortage, pushing crude oil prices to new highs.Higher energy costs could impact production, transport, packaging material, and overall market sentiment in the coming weeks. Even though the pig and pork market should be typically entering to a quieter period, this unpredictability adds a layer of uncertainty to price fluctuations. Thereby high energy prices are not good for the purchasing power from consumer.
