Exports up, imports down in Canadian dairy trade

Canadian exports posted a positive result in January, rising by 12.41%, or 8.8 million kg LME. Negative performances were recorded for SMP, WMP, milk constituents, lactose, WPI/WPC 80%, BMP, cheese and butter oil. Import volumes in January fell by 0.70%, or 8.9 million kg LME, down from December levels. The decline points to a broadly unfavourable trading environment, although positive results were still seen across nearly half of the product categories.The drop in imports was almost equal in size to the increase in exports, with exports up by 8.8 million kg LME and imports down by 8.9 million kg LME. Taken together, the combined shift was close in volume to the decline in milk production. Notably, weaker import volumes coincided with lower milk production over the same period.
