The US Meat industry is once again the subject of political debate. Democratic lawmakers are preparing legislation that could force major US meatpacking companies to restructure in an effort to curb r record-high beef prices. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is expected to introduce a bill that would prevent companies from processing more than one category of meat. This could require large processors to spin off their beef operations.If enacted, the proposal could mark one of the most significant interventions in the US meat industry in decades. The initiative comes as policymakers face growing pressure to address rising food costs and concerns about market concentration in the meatpacking sector.The proposed legislation would also require a review of foreign-owned meat companies operating in the United States. Supporters argue that breaking up large processors could increase competition and lower prices for consumers, while critics warn the move could disrupt supply chains and raise costs for producers.Class action lawsuitThe proposal follows repeated allegations that companies in the US meat industry have engaged in anti-competitive practices. The sector is highly concentrated. In the beef market, most processing capacity is controlled by four companies: JBS USA, Tyson Foods, Cargill and National Beef Packing Company. The pork sector is also dominated by a small group of firms, led by Smithfield Foods, Tyson Foods, JBS and Hormel Foods.Concerns about market manipulation have been particularly strong in the beef industry. In 2019, cattle ranchers filed a major antitrust class action lawsuit against the four largest meatpackers, accusing them of conspiring to suppress cattle prices while selling beef at inflated prices. The case has led to partial settlements but continues against several companies. In February 2025, JBS agreed to pay $83.5 million to settle claims without admitting wrongdoing, while litigation against Tyson, Cargill and National Beef remains ongoing in federal court in Minnesota.
