Mauritania biggest buyer of Dutch onions in week 4

Mauritania turns out to be the largest buyer of Dutch onions in the week of January 19 to 25. The West African country imported a total of 3,278 tons of onions from the Netherlands during that week, according to preliminary figures from the KCB and the GroentenFruit Huis. Two other West African countries have primarily set the tone in terms of the sales volume of Dutch onions this season; these are Senegal and Ivory Coast. They have been the largest buyers by far, but sales to these countries have weakened somewhat or have come to a standstill. Senegal has closed its borders since mid-January to protect its own cultivation, while Ivory Coast is purchasing much less than in the previous weeks. In week 4, exports to Ivory Coast dropped to 1,712 tons. The total export to this country amounts to around 152,000 tons this season. Senegal has been by far the largest buyer with 232,000 tons. In week 4, 116 tons of Dutch onions still entered the country. The import to this country, located north of Senegal, now amounts to around 45,734 tons. This quantity is a third more than the export in the same period last season. In addition to Mauritania, Guinea and Great Britain were among the top 3 largest buyers in the fourth calendar week of this year. Guinea imported 2,593 tons, while Great Britain imported 2,579 tons. Sales to Guinea are picking up again after a quiet period during Christmas and New Year. The exports to Great Britain have become slightly quieter after several weeks with increased shipments. The total export of Dutch onions has surpassed the 950,000-ton mark after 30 weeks. This means that nearly 32,000 tons have been exported weekly. Last year, the pace during the same period was just below 29,000 tons. This means that the exports still have a lead of around 10% over the previous year.
