Piglet price rises in a friendlier market

For the first time since early November last year, the DCA BestPigletPrice shows a positive trend again. The (export) demand for piglets noticeably increases at the end of January. The trend in the market for fattening pigs remains unchanged for now. The demand for piglets has been noticeably improving since mid-last week. Particularly due to increased demand for larger export groups which are changing owners for prices between €36 and €38 per pig (or even higher). The prices for smaller collection groups are at a lower level, but still above the listing levels, so it sounds. Especially from Spain, there is increased demand. This can be seen as an unexpected movement that noticeably adds momentum to the market. At the same time, resistance in the domestic market remains, as the prices for fattening pigs have not yet shown any significant upward movement. However, this does not take away from the fact that there is also an increase in demand for piglets in the domestic market. Unchanged pig market The DCA Market Mutation Price remains unchanged this week, which aligns with the parts prices. The supply is still relatively large, partly due to disruptions at various slaughterhouses, which caused pigs to be postponed last week. Very slowly, the average slaughter weight is showing a decline again, indicating that the pig backlog is diminishing. In week 3, the weight decreased by 0.4 kilograms to an average of 102.2 kilograms. The 286,389 slaughtered pigs that week was comparable to last year. It is likely that the supply will remain on the generous side for a few more weeks. According to insiders in the market, the fattening pig market remains quite sluggish for now. Complicated information in the market suggests that the pig backlog that formed after Christmas has not yet been resolved. The consequence of this is that the demand for fattening pigs is still not picking up. However, there is an expectation that the backlog will be resolved somewhat earlier than in previous years, since quite a few pig farmers stopped due to the Lbv+ scheme last year. Whether this will lead to a price increase is still difficult to estimate. Although it is expected that the supply will decline, the availability in our competing markets (particularly in Denmark) remains ample. The average of €31.940 clearly indicates an increase of €0.50, which raises the DCA BestPigletPrice this week to €32 per pig.
