Pork meat market going through quite a flat phase

The pressure on the pork meat market is gradually becoming less significant. With one exception, the meat markets are stable, and the pork meat market has temporarily broken its downward trend. However, there is one market where prices are still under pressure. On average, the carcass price of pigs has decreased by only 0.53 cents per kilo. Compared to recent weeks, this decline is very small. Last week, the price dropped by 7.14 cents, while the week before it decreased by 6.75 cents per kilo. The reason for the relative stability is that the prices of almost all parts have remained stable. Only the prices of necks increased this week. Again, the prices of boneless necks fell harder than the prices of necks with bone. We saw this pattern in the last two weeks as well. The reason for this is simple. Due to low pig prices, it is profitable for processors to even debone meat. This creates extra margin for relatively small players, and this is welcomed with enthusiasm, given the difficult sales of all types of meat. As a result, slaughterhouses must offer their deboned meat at lower prices to fully utilize their own staff. Stable pig pricesThe calm on the Northern European pig market has also returned. For the second week in a row, the three major slaughterhouses in the area have not changed their prices. The slaughter price of Tönnies remains at €1.45 per kilo. The price of Danish Crown converts to €1.25, and Vion reported a pig price of €1.21 per kilo. In Southern Europe, the pig market is no longer as volatile as before. The most important thing is that the decline in the Spanish market from the week before was not followed up. This makes it much less likely that the situation in the country will pull European pig (meat) prices further down. There is still slight price pressure in France, where prices continue to creep downwards by fractions of cents. The strongest pressure within the major markets was noticeable in Italy. In that country, the price decreased by 3 cents. Over the two-week period, the price dropped by 11 cents, from €1.52 to €1.41.
