Week before Christmas one of the largest onion exports ever

In the week before Christmas, this year there was just no record set in the export of Dutch onions. The difference is minimal, but preliminary figures from KCB and GroentenFruit Huis show that the export last year in the same week was just a bit larger. The figures show that 45,000 tons of onions were exported in the last week before Christmas. This amount is almost 300 tons smaller than in the same week of 2024. It should also be noted that the outcome of this season is still exclusive of outstanding items. This means that after correction, it may turn out that a new record was ultimately set. However, a significant adjustment will still be necessary. In November 2020, there were actually two weeks that achieved an even larger weekly export than in recent years. In week 46 of 2020, as much as 47,000 tons of onions crossed the border in one week. After a significant dip in the last week of November with a weekly export of less than 25,000 tons, exports in December increased significantly again. With the highlight being an export of 45,007 tons in the last week before Christmas. Thus, it is the fourth week ever that more than 45,000 tons of onions were exported. The total export has risen this season to 833,000 tons in the period up to and including week 51. That is the largest amount ever in the same period. So far, 2020 and 2021 showed the best figures with a pre-Christmas interim total of about 770,000 tons. Senegal was again by far the best customer in week 51 with a purchase of nearly 19,000 tons. Exports to Great Britain peaked before Christmas at 4,260 tons. Exports to Ivory Coast progressed somewhat more quietly than in the previous two weeks, with a quantity of 3,266 tons. Exports to Malaysia and Indonesia did increase to 2,683 tons and 2,167 tons, respectively.
