Onion export shows strong decline at the end of November

The sorters and packers had already announced it, but now the figures also show a strong decline in onion exports. In the last week of November, the export plummeted to even slightly less than 25,000 tons. These are preliminary figures from the KCB and the VegetablesFruit House for week 48 - the last week of November - which present a different picture than in the preceding period. With 24,617 tons according to the preliminary figures, there has been a serious dip in exports. The dip is mainly reflected in reduced sales in that week to Senegal. In week 48, 3,225 tons were shipped to the West African country. That is over 11,000 tons less than the more than 14,000 tons in the preceding week. With nearly 18,000 tons going to Senegal in week 46, the market there had become significantly oversaturated. Senegal hits the brakes In short, it is not surprising that Senegal significantly hit the brakes. Sorters and packers saw this coming, of course, as they were having a harder time selling their product. Nevertheless, they assumed that exports would still be around 30,000 tons. One thought just under that, while the other expected just slightly more than 30,000 tons. In that respect, the sales of less than 25,000 tons is indeed a disappointment. It should also be noted that the shifting of a ship sometimes has a great impact on the outcomes of a week. This will become evident from the figures that will be published regarding the first week of December. It is clear that exports are taking a pause as a result of the great success in the weeks until the end of November. Total exports have indeed risen to above 720,000 tons. Never before has so much been exported in the five months from July to November as this year. Senegal is the largest buyer of this with 171,500 tons. This means that about 55,000 tons more have been shipped to this West African country than in the same period last year. Almost 50% more, therefore. Ivory Coast had already hit the brakes a little earlier this year, but with 4,600 tons, a large quantity is still shipped there weekly. Total sales to Ivory Coast have already risen to above 126,000 tons. That is 23,000 tons more than last year in the first five months of the sales season.
