US imports Spanish pork again

The United States is once again allowing the import of Spanish pork, provided that the product does not come from a radius of twenty kilometers around the recent outbreak of African swine fever. The decision is an important boost for the Spanish pig sector. Exports to the country are relatively limited. In 2024, Spain exported 14,287 tons of pork to the United States. That was a record volume, but nevertheless, the export accounted for only 1.4% of the exports outside the European Union, according to data from Eurostat. With this decision, however, hope grows that more countries will again accept Spanish pork from outside the infected area. However, there is not only good news. For the first time this week, the number of confirmed infections has increased to sixteen cases. However, all infections are located within the existing infection zone. The risk for the livestock sector remains limited for now. The 55 pig farms within the designated zone have recently been tested with PCR analyses, and no infections have been found. The Catalan veterinary services continue to monitor the farms intensively.
