Piglet market is in troubled waters

The piglet market is going through a difficult period now that the export to Spain has taken a significant hit. The consequence of this is that the DCA BestPigletPrice takes a considerable step back this week. Normally, the piglet market picks up at this time of year, but this year is different. The outbreak of African swine fever (ASF) in Spain has a large impact on the market. According to the preliminary export figures from RVO, 16,736 piglets were exported to Spain last week, which is a decrease of 65% compared to the previous week. Although domestic demand has not deteriorated in itself, the loss of demand from Spain overshadows the entire market. Overall, the sentiment is poor and the uncertainty is great. Extra slaughter piglets A recovery in Spanish demand would be highly desirable, but the question is whether this will happen in the short term. Additionally, the broken weeks around Christmas and New Year are approaching, which brings an extra logistical challenge. Increasingly, the surplus of piglets is being slaughtered, but that will also be more difficult around the holidays. Traders often opt for a significant reduction. Based on the submissions, the DCA BestPigletPrice declines by €4.50 to €36 per piglet. The German VEZG piglet price remains unchanged at €40 per piglet.
