Local wheat market rows against the current

Worldwide, wheat prices are under significant pressure. Yet, we see rising prices in the Netherlands. Quietly, prices have been increasing here since the low point in September and early October. The Grain Exchange in Groningen increased the wheat quotation this week by €1 to €187 per ton. This places the price back at the same level as late August. The difference from the low point two months ago has quietly increased to nearly €10 per ton. These are not earth-shattering differences, but still. With 10 tons per hectare and a price difference of €10 per ton, that amounts to €100 per hectare. You either have it or you don't. What is notable is that the price increase this week (€1 per ton) in Groningen has occurred despite an increasing supply from abroad. We see the same price movement in the wholesale market in Hamburg. We see a similar development in barley. In Groningen, the quotation rose this week to €186 per ton. This is the highest price level in the 2025-2026 season. Sales started in July at prices around €180 per ton, which then slightly dropped in September to €178 per ton. Just like with wheat, a cautious upward trend began in October. Futures markets back to square oneThe futures markets have completely returned to square one regarding wheat prices. After a brief recovery at the end of October and early November, the futures market in Paris has fallen back below €190 per ton. Higher global production figures have fueled pessimists again, and that clearly sets the tone at this moment. We can also see this reflected in the price development of the currently most traded wheat contract in Paris, that of March 2026. The price difference between December and March is disappearing like snow in the sun. On Tuesday, the March contract closed just above €190 per ton, which puts the March contract almost in the same boat as the December trade. On Tuesday, wheat prices in Chicago finally showed a slight increase. Here, the most trades are also in March contracts, and the price rose by $0.04½ to $5.39¼ per bushel. However, this price is €0.20 per bushel lower than a week ago. Converted, this amounts to a price drop of €5 per ton over the past week to €172 per ton.
