Onion export speeds past 600,000 tons

The Dutch onion exporters have delivered more than 600,000 tons of onions to foreign countries in nineteen weeks. This surpasses the previous record from 2022 by more than 9%, or about 52,000 tons. In the latest report from the KCB and GroentenFruit Huis, some corrections have been made that led to a reduction in the export figures for previous weeks. As a result, one week of 40,000 tons plus is deducted, namely week 44. The new figure for that week is just below this threshold at 39,944 tons. The difference is minimal. Not to worry, as the figure for week 45 is again just above this level. This brings the number of weeks with an export of over 40,000 tons back up to six. We have never seen such a number before; thus, this season remains unique in its kind. For now, however, it is still taking some getting used to, exporting at this scale. Exporters and packers have been saying for weeks that they are taking it very easy. And yet, they are exporting significantly more than in the best season ever. The difference from last year has already risen to over 107,000 tons. This amounts to a lead of 22%. Remarkably large is the sales to Senegal in week 45. In the first week of November, almost 12,000 tons of Dutch onions were delivered there. That is significantly more than the nearly 10,000 tons that were shipped weekly to this West African country before. It is not surprising that some stagnation has occurred in the logistics of that country since then. A bit quieter to Ivory Coast It was a bit quieter at the beginning of this month in sales to Ivory Coast. That country took almost 7,000 tons of Dutch onions in the first week of this month. Meanwhile, sales to Great Britain continue to be strong, with again well over 3,000 tons. There was a spike at the beginning of this month in exports to the Dominican Republic. According to the latest figures, 2,156 tons were shipped to this country that week. That is a lot, especially considering the total sales of 14,400 tons in nineteen weeks.
