Senegal has a large share in record pace onion export

The Dutch onion export was a bit quieter in the third full week of October. Nevertheless, a total amount of just over 36,000 tons was exported. The total export has increased to 526,000 tons in the third week of October, according to preliminary figures from the KCB and GroentenFruit Huis. The export is now ahead by 100,000 tons compared to last year. This means that almost a quarter more has been exported than in the same weeks of the 2024-2025 season. In week 43, Senegal remains the largest buyer, although the export to this country at 9,375 tons is also smaller than in previous weeks. The total export to this West African country has now risen to 114,000 tons. This amount is 40,000 tons larger than in the same period a year ago. Thus, Senegal holds a large share in the increased export this year. The same is true for Ivory Coast. The 7,400 tons in week 43 ensures that the total export to that country approaches 100,000 tons. This means that Ivory Coast has imported nearly a third more than in the same weeks last year. Great Britain Great Britain is 'still going strong'. The Brits are taking more than 3,000 tons weekly, making this market perform better than last year. By the end of October, this export will cross the 50,000 tons threshold. Thus, this onion stream is almost a quarter larger than last year when about 40,000 tons were taken over 17 weeks. What stands out further in week 43 is that Mauritania and Malaysia have purchased slightly more onions compared to the previous week. The latter is one of the few major destinations that has taken slightly fewer onions than last year. Belgium is also importing fewer onions. This may be related to the possibility that Africa is receiving less support through Belgium.
