Onion export records fifth week above 40,000 tons

The Dutch onion exporters have already completed a fifth week this season with an export of over 40,000 tons. As a result, nearly 500,000 tons of onions have already been exported, according to preliminary figures from KCB and GroentenFruit Huis. Weeks with an onion export of more than 40,000 tons are still relatively scarce. Especially in the months from July to October. So far this season, this threshold has been surpassed seven times in these months, five times of which are this season. This indicates how exceptional such a large export is. Normally, the peak for onion exporters is just before Christmas. Last season, November and December together had four weeks with an export volume of more than 40,000 tons. The absolute weekly record is currently held for week 51 of 2024 with an amount of over 45,000 tons. The count for week 42 - the last known period - stands at 41,418 tons. The total export thus rises to 491,216 tons. This amount is 95,000 tons larger than in the same period last year. This means that in the first sixteen weeks of this season, nearly a quarter more has been exported than in the same period last year. Top performers Exports to Senegal have already surpassed 100,000 tons. And Ivory Coast is following closely, now with almost 90,000 tons. These are the real top performers. In week 42, nearly 20,000 tons were shipped to these two West African destinations. This is the largest weekly quantity of this season. Furthermore, there are three destinations with more than 3,000 tons delivered in the second full week of October. Great Britain is one of them, but we have been accustomed to that for weeks. Guinea and Mali have joined in. Guinea accounts for a total purchase of 30,000 tons of onions in the Netherlands, which is almost a third more than last year. The flow of onions to Mali is approaching 30,000 tons, nearly doubling compared to last year. Slightly rising prices The high demand is causing prices to rise despite a large harvest. The regional market South is slightly higher this week than last week. Finer batches are bringing in according to this market €14.50 to €17 per 100 kilos. For coarser batches, €15.50 to €18 per 100 kilos is being paid. Red onions are less in demand. There are hardly any transactions known for these onions. Market South quotes for finer batches €14 to €15 per 100 kilos. If deals can be made at all, it will be for the coarser sizes. For coarse batches, the market quotes €15 to €18 per 100 kilos.
