Netherlands export easily 40,000 tons of onions

At a steady pace, the Netherlands manages to export more than 40,000 tons of onions weekly. As October approaches, week 40 is almost on par with the exports of week 39, according to preliminary export figures from KCB and the GroentenFruit Huis. In the previous weeks, weeks exceeding 40,000 tons in exports alternated with weeks of 35,000 or 36,000 tons. This has not been the case in week 39 and week 40. In both weeks, the exports are around 41,000 tons. This makes the current season even more remarkable than it already was. When describing the course of this export season, superlatives fall short. For the first time in history, the Netherlands has exported more than 400,000 tons of onions in the first fourteen weeks. The weekly average is already approaching 30,000 tons. Unprecedented. The lead compared to last year has already increased to almost 90,000 tons (+27.6%). Crossing the 40,000 tons mark in week 40 has been achieved without an explosive export of more than 10,000 tons to Senegal. No, with 9,500 tons, this West African country is still the largest buyer, but this cannot be called an extreme outlier. Ivory Coast is closely following with nearly 9,000 tons. Great Britain continues to participate well with 3,200 tons. In addition to the aforementioned countries and African destinations such as Mali, Guinea, Gambia, and Mauritania, it is notable that Nicaragua and Malaysia are also purchasing a lot of onions. Israel, on the other hand, is hardly a buyer this season, while last year a significant top quantity was purchased.
