'Strong in the soil, sustainable in the world', is the motto with which the Agrofoodcluster presents the Seed Potato Vision 2040. With this, it wants to emphasize the quality and strength of a seed potato complex that is mindful of its environment. With the future vision, the cluster sets the course for a sustainable and profitable sector. According to the cluster of companies and organizations, recognition of seed potatoes as a strategic crop by policymakers is crucial now. In a time when food security is no longer a given, we must strengthen the foundations of our food chain. The Dutch seed potato sector is such a foundation. The Dutch seed potato sector is known worldwide for its quality and economic significance. Still, the challenges are great: climate change, stricter environmental regulations, and geopolitical tensions put pressure on the chain. These are also the reasons why the future vision has been formulated. Four pillars towards 2040 The vision revolves around four main themes that are decisive for the future, according to the cluster. Top quality and a wide choice of varieties is the first theme. By investing in breeding, a broad and innovative package of varieties can be offered, thus allowing farmers to respond to changing conditions and increasing disease pressure. Sustainability is the second theme, which aims to minimize environmental resource use. This includes the development of resilient cultivation systems, green inputs, and precision technology to further reduce the ecological footprint. Also important is a healthy earning model for farmers. The income must allow room for investments in innovation and risk management, so that farmers can operate sustainably. The last theme concerns the preservation of a strong and complete seed potato complex. Breeding, cultivation, and trade are inextricably linked. The strength of the Dutch sector lies in this chain integration. Preserving all links in the country is essential to safeguard innovation power and international top position. Interests are high With 1,600 farmers and 40,000 hectares of area, seed potatoes form an important economic pillar. The annual export of 800,000 tons provides the basis worldwide for the production of over 30 million tons of consumption potatoes. That is enough to feed 800 million people.
