DCA Benchmark Index Specification DCA EU Pork and Pig Price Indices

DCA Market Intelligence publishes weekly benchmark price indices covering key stages of the European pork and pig value chain: piglets, live pigs, and pig carcasses. The indices reflect prevailing market conditions across key EU pork production and trading regions. The DCA EU Pork Price Indices consist of three composite benchmark indices:

  • DCA EU-5 Piglet Price Index
  • DCA EU-6 Live Pigs Price Index
  • DCA EU-6 Pork Price Index

The specifications of these benchmark price indices are described below.

1. Product description

Quality

  • Piglet Price Index: standardised to a nominal 25 kg piglet
  • Live Pigs Price Index: standard slaughter pigs, expressed on a live-weight basis
  • Pork Price Index: EU SEUROP Class E

Unit

  • Piglet Price Index: EUR/head, excluding VAT and added bonus
  • Live Pigs Price Index: EUR/kg live weight, excluding VAT
  • Pork Price Index: EUR/kg carcass weight, excluding VAT and added bonus

2. Methodological framework

These benchmark price indices are administered in accordance with DCA's internal compliance framework.

3. Origin and regional scope

  • Piglet Price Index: Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, and Denmark.
  • Live Pigs and Pork Price Indices: Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, France, and Poland.

These country sets are intended to reflect a significant share of EU production, movements, and slaughter activity.

4. Price definition

Each benchmark price index reflects a composite benchmark level for the reference week based on final published component prices available for that week. Component price inputs are aligned to the index specification before aggregation.

  • Piglet Price Index: All underlying national piglet quotations apply for a Monday–Sunday validity period. The weekly index reflects the price valid during that Monday–Sunday window
  • Pork Price Index: The index is calculated based on a common reference week (for example, Week 1, Week 2, etc.) For each reference week, the national quotation explicitly assigned to that same week by each country is used. All quotations apply a Monday–Sunday validity window. No cross-week adjustments or mixing of different national week numbers are performed.

5. Calculation method

Component prices are retrieved from official or industry-recognised publishers. Where multiple component prices exist for a single country or market segment, they are consolidated into a single national input according to pre-defined rules.

No estimated or provisional prices are used. Each week it is confirmed that all countries have published their prices, all three product categories (piglets, live pigs, carcasses) have valid values, and no series is missing because of delays or publication issues. If data from a contributing country are unavailable, the latest available value will be caried forward and adjusted by the week-on-week change observed in the other contributing countries. Once the data are published, the index will be recalculated and revised on the next publication date.

All indices are calculated as production-weighted averages of national benchmark component prices. Weights reflects each country's relative importance in EU production and are based on a rolling three-year average of the most recent complete official production statistics available. Weights are reviewed annually once complete statistics are available and remain fixed throughout the year.

Piglet Price Index:weighted by national piglet production volumes (heads)
Live Pigs Price Index:weighted by the number of slaughtered pigs (heads)
Pork Price Index:weighted by pigmeat production measured in carcass weight (tons)

The aggregated EU price series for each product is normalised to a fixed base equal to the average price over the period 2021–2025, where the base equals 100. Using a multi-year average base mitigates the impact of exceptional volatility observed in individual years and anchors the indices to a representative medium-term market level. The calculated index values are rounded to two decimal places prior to publication.

6. Data collection window and publication

All DCA EU Pork Price Indices are calculated weekly and published with a one-week delay. The indices are released every Thursday at 17:00 CET, following completion of all national component price publications for the reference week. This schedule ensures that all contributing sources are fully available and finalised prior to calculation, enhancing accuracy, consistency, and cross-country comparability while maintaining timely market relevance.

7. Complaints and feedback

Any questions or complaints regarding this benchmark may be submitted to DCA Market Intelligence via pra@dcami.com, in line with the DCA Complaints and Appeals Procedure (see Public Methodology Summary).
